The Pirate Bay released a blockchain-powered pirate game called ‘’A Pirate’s Life for Me. This is not your typical online role playing game (RPG) in that it does not allow players to level up and accomplish in-game tasks like buying power, resources or currency. Instead of trading digital assets, the player must earn them by completing quests on the site.
The “a pirate’s life for me 1 hour” is a song by the band Queen. The song was released in 1973, and has been covered by many artists since then. It is about pirates who are looking for treasure.
While I fear that we over-dramatize the journey of entrepreneurship, there’s something to be said for the occasional reminder that, when things go well, starting a company can be quite the adventure.
Over the weekend, Michael Arrington, the creator of TechCrunch, published Are You a Pirate?, a thoughtful celebration of entrepreneurship’s journey. He states, in contrast to ordinary people:
Entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are all messed up. They don’t need to be compensated for taking risks since risk provides them with value. To put it another way, they like trying new things.
I disagree with it since it contradicts my personal experience, but Michael Arrington has earned the right to express it. He’s already paid his dues. As he puts it:
I used to work as a corporate lawyer in Silicon Valley, where I earned a good living representing technology companies. After seven to eight years, there was a strong possibility I’d make partner and be earning a million dollars a year by the time I was 40. All I had to do was put in the effort and bring in the business. I excelled at both.
However, after just three years in the legal field, I decided to join a startup. And it was for the sake of adventure that I did it. I didn’t want to simply watch the game; I wanted to be a part of it. My folks were certain I was insane. They still have no clue what I do for a profession, and they were irritated that I wasted their money on a law degree just to squander it before I turned 30.
But I went ahead and did it anyhow. After a year, I quit that firm to establish my own business. Since then, I’ve never looked back. The venture investors earned a lot of money on the first business I founded — almost $30 million — but the founders made close to nothing. Following that, the businesses I launched were a mix of failures and middling successes. But I never considered obtaining a “real job” at any time. That was a black-and-white world to me, and I want technicolor. I also despise working for others since I’m terrible at it.
What’s the deal with the (though minor) disagreement? I suppose it’s because I always handle risk with a strategy. I like starting a business and making things happen, but risk is a necessary side effect, not the goal.
Entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are like pirates, according to Michael Arrington, since they like taking risks.
Why did certain individuals become pirates in the 17th century, or whenever? I’m guessing the payout was awful. You have a very tiny possibility of making a fortune from a reward, and a very high risk of drowning, being hanged, being shot, or whatever. Even for the captain, living aboard a tiny ship with a hundred other men must have been a nightmare.
In my imagined pirate world, though, these people just possessed severely messed-up risk-aversion algorithms. They lusted for that danger, unlike the majority of the other individuals. The prospect of wealth was just a selling point for the enterprise. The true reward, though, was the life of a pirate.
So I’ve been an entrepreneur, not as successful as others, but I’ve made it through and raised a family, and as a pirate, I would have failed miserably. Living on the ship with a hundred other men would have been hellish, but I’d have been one of the ones that drowned, or were hanged, or were shot, or whatever.
I wanted to be able to accomplish what I enjoyed while still earning enough money to support my family. I spent a lot of time planning. And I took chances when I had to, but only when the benefits were worth it at the time.
Still, it’s Halloween (as I write this on a Sunday afternoon), and pirate sounds quite nice right now. So here’s Michael Arrington’s stirring conclusion:
There are many things in this world that I will almost certainly never experience. Combat in the military. Being the dictator of a tiny nation in Central America. The act of dunking a basketball. Being a well-known rock star. Or going for a stroll on Mars.
But there is one thing I have always been and will continue to be: an entrepreneur. And, wow, does it feel nice. Because if I were a lawyer right now, even a wealthy lawyer, I’d always questioned whether I had what it took to do anything other than work for someone else with my life.
With that, I say, if you’re going to do it, do it your way, not his or mine. Arggh.
