About Selling Content

If you’re a content creator such as an author, filmmaker or musician and would like to sell your work through the blockchain, here’s how it works.

selling content online is not a new concept. In fact, it’s been around for quite some time. However, the idea of selling content online has only recently become more popular than ever before.

I believe I have a good understanding of the “content” industry. I’ve worked as a journalist, columnist, expert article writer, speaker, blogger, and author for companies like Entrepreneur Press and McGraw-Hill.

I had a conversation with a close buddy who is trying to make it in the content industry the other day. She’s an entrepreneur with a lot of experience and a great writer. But she’s taking things slowly.

The fact that the content industry isn’t necessarily a company is part of the issue. Experts all around the globe, including myself, are ready to publish for free since they earn their money elsewhere. Some people provide material in return for connections, some for exposure, and yet others just because they want to be heard. As a result, selling what others give free is becoming more difficult.

We used to fill the gaps between the advertisements when I was a journalist. It’s a lot more complicated now. Why do famous people and intellectuals publish for free on Huffington Post? They do it because they want to, not because they are obligated to. Why do the majority of individuals blog? They do it because they want to. It’s a rare blog that generates money for its creator (sure, there are some, and they are well known; but they are also one in a million).

I don’t believe that selling material for money has a bright future. Maybe for artistic material, but not for business. It seems that the globe is brimming with specialists who are ready to write, lecture, and blog for free (or maybe for links). They get repaid in terms of exposure and, hopefully, sales of whatever it is that they really sell. And many of them just wish to write about their favorite topics. It’s all about having a voice and being visible to them. That seems to have a long-term impact on the business of just selling material.

I happen to be one of those specialists. So I’m caught in the midst of a wind of change. At least for me, it’s fantastic.
